Reservations

Reservation (noun):  an arrangement to have something (such as a room, table, or seat) held for your use at a later time; a feeling of doubt or uncertainty about something; an area of land in the U.S. that is kept separate as a place for Native Americans to live. 

So what reservation are we talking about here? Definitely not the first option, but couldn't either of the seconds work? After all, what is a reservation? Isn't the setting aside of land for a certain group of people a show of doubt or uncertainty about their place in the rest of the country? Or are we talking about the idealistic reservation here? An idealistic reservation is what Americans like to imagine an Indian Reservation is really like: a place where one culture can live together, unaffected by modern day America, and continue to practice their traditional ways. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has dragged that image down, ripped it off of the wall and torn it into a million different pieces. An Indian Reservation is not the place America wants to see it as. 

So where does that leave the discussion of a community as a reservation? Can a community be a reservation? A place where a similar people can come together and live, a place to be happy? Look at Chicago: China Town and Little Italy, Chicago's South Side Irish and it's North Side Germans. Aren't these all reservations in of themselves? People of a similar background and culture grouping themselves together, not because they were forced to, but because they feel safer and more comfortable with their own people? 

So where does that leave me? I am an immigrant into the South Side, I was born here but my parents came from far away (in Beverly terms): Forest Park and Evanston. In a close-knit community we lack the assets that many other residents have: their parents were born and raised in Beverly, as were they. In many families, generation after generation has seen their life go by here. Everyone knows everyone else. Everyone belongs to the same church, everyone goes to the same school, high school choices are predictable. (For the sake of this post, I'm going to refer to the area I live in as Beverly, not all of it)

So what happens when you throw a Junior into the mix? Someone who doesn't really belong? Someone who acts and thinks differently, who does the unexpected and is a constant outsider? Someone who leaves the community school, doesn't go to any of the usual high schools, doesn't hang out at the Seven-Eleven or with the right people at Munroe and Beverly? What happens to that person? Like Junior, they are bullied, isolated, alienated, fated to always be an outsider. Sure, there may be a Rowdy or two in their life, but for the most part, they are on their own. For them, their reservation become something that hurts them, something that is comfortable and familiar but also deadly, something that will try to put them down and make them hurt. They both love and hate their community, desperate to escape but terrified of leaving what they have always known. 

So what do they do? They find a basketball team; a group of people who will accept them no matter who or what they are, who will love and accept the loner, united as they are in their passion. Junior creates his own reservation in the gym and with his team; basketball becomes his safe place, somewhere he can escape to and be with his own people, people who share a culture and a passion and are more than just a group of people together, they are a people. If Beverly is my world, MPTG is my reservation. 

A physical reservation is deadly; look at what happened to Junior. But a metaphorical reservation can be a person's savior. It can rescue them from the oppressive physical reservation, a thing that can kill a person, both in spirit and in body. The reservations a person creates or finds in a group give them somewhere they can be themselves, a place that they don't have to fear bullies, a place where they have friends who value them for who they are, because those friends know who they are better than most, since they have no reason to fear being themselves around their people. It's a place where they are completely comfortable, a place of solace, a place of peace and happiness. 

I can empathize with Junior, though he definitely has it worse than I do. We both found ourselves a reservation, him in his sport, me in my art. It is one of the few places in the world we feel truly happy, one of the few places where we don't have to fear others for their words can do to us, a place where we don't care how different we are, a place that is our safe house. It is our place, our reservation.

A Commentary on Max (And Other Things)

Mr. Max's version of defense for Bigger was unique. There was no trying to prove him innocent, or insane, or just a poor boy who was down on his luck, rather, he searched for the "why" of what had happened. This was brave, very brave. Not only is Mr. Max from a political party that is feared and hated all over America, and is defending one of the most hated criminals in Chicago, he is challenging the, as Buckley put it, "sacred customs" of a very old city. He is challenging the white property owners, store owners, those who charge exorbitant rates for second hand things, old bread and run-dowwn houses. He's challenging people who hate him already, and I respect him for that.

The saddest part about book three is the inevitability. No matter how well-said Mr. Max's speech is, no matter how true it is, Bigger is going to the chair. The entire court, hiding behind their veil of justice, is against him. The judge allows Buckley to twist facts, to emotionally affect the crowd with his account of the night Mary died. The jurors have all read the papers, have all been exposed to the truths and lies and twisted images the press provides. The entire trial is rushed, to sate the roaring crowd outside. Bigger doesn't have a chance, and he knows it. Mr. Max allows himself to believe that he can save Bigger, but it only leads to pain for him. 

Mr. Max gives a beautiful speech, a speech that, given today, may have swayed the hearts of modern Chicago. But Bigger's Chicago is not ready to accept Mr. Max's speech as truth, so they ignore it, fight it, kill the one thing it was trying to save. 

The people of the court, of the crowd outside are like the insane man in the Cook County Jail, both screaming for something that makes no sense to anyone outside of themselves. In the inmates head, screaming for his papers to show the president, at the professor who incarcerated him, makes perfect sense. To the people of Chicago who want Bigger dead, there is no other choice. He must die. Mr. Max is the sane one, the one who cannot understand the reasons in his opponents' heads. But to them, Bigger must die. There is no other truth.

Mr. Max tried so hard. He believed in what he was doing, put his soul into it. In doing so, he killed himself. Bigger was going to die, and the boy knew it, but Mr. Max refused to believe it. He hurt himself in trying to save Bigger, because he was fighting a lost cause, fighting a losing battle against Fate.

Green Lights, Yellow Cars, and Church Steeples

A Commentary On The Great Gatsby

To start with: Gatsby's obsession with how things look. As a person, he is obsessed with how others view him. Take the green light at the end of Daisy's dock; he stands on his property, facing the water, then slowly reaches out his hand as if to grab it. Does he know Nick is watching? Probably not, but someone could be watching. And if they are, Gatsby wants them to see this longing, this desperation, for whatever the green light is, for the watcher probably does not realize whose dock that is. A person may wish for someone without a physical display. Then look at the medal and the Oxford photo. He insists that Nick sees him as he wants to be seen, as an educated war hero. While he is educated somewhat and served valiantly in the war, he must insure that Nick sees the warped version of this, the version where his family sent him to Oxford. When Gatsby brings Daisy into his house, he again forces her to see him as he wants to be seen. The shirts, a sign of great wealth, to show her that he has money. The books, a sign that he is educated. Klipspringer, the pianist, to show he has power, by ordering him to play, even though the man doesn't want to. Gatsby has a vision in his head of how he wants the world to view him; he works hard to show the world Jay Gatsby, instead of James Gatz. 

Next point: if only everyone would talk freely to one another, then all problems may have been solved. Imagine if Nick had told Daisy about Myrtle after that party in New York. Daisy could have confronted Tom, who would have been angered but called off the relationship in order to placate Daisy. (Of course, he could have started another one whenever he pleased.) Daisy would not be so frustrated as to jump to start a relationship with Gatsby if her husband wasn't actively in a relationship with another woman, so there would never have been the fight that ended with Myrtle's death. Not that Myrtle would run out to the car if Tom had ended their relationship. If Myrtle never died, Wilson would never have gone mad, never would have gone after the driver of the car and never would have shot Gatsby and then himself. While this entire situation is not Nick's fault, he could have prevented. 

And now, the question of fault: whose fault is it? As stated above, Nick seems to be free of blame. He did not set all this into motion. For the other four characters, blame seems to spread out evenly, and they all played Nick into their plans. Tom holds part of the blame, for not staying faithful to Daisy, something that frustrated her and led to her being willing to cheat on him. Daisy holds part of the blame, for cheating on Tom with Gatsby, and not confronting Tom about his other relationship. Jordan holds blame for getting Nick to agree to help Gatsby and for not telling Daisy and Tom all that she knew. Gatsby holds blame for still courting Daisy even though she was married, and encouraging her to cheat on Tom. And while Nick could have prevented a lot of this, he has been used. He is a pawn in these people's games, used by Gatsby and Daisy and Tom and Jordan; to speak out would be to hurt someone and something, and to stop, to refuse to help would also damage his life and their lives.

Janie

This is going to be short and sweet, because last night was absolutely insane, so I'm writing this early in the morning before I go to school.
Janie is lost. She has all these ideas of what she wants her life to be, but no idea how to make those ideas reality. Her main tactic is to wait. As my father always says, "good things come to those who wait." Janie only knows this rule. She waits with Logan until Joe comes along, but then realizes that Joe isn't who she thought he was, so she literally waits until he dies. She doesn't run off again, she just waits. 
And this tactic may actually work for her. Tea Cake seems like a nice guy. Of course, Joe seemed great too. For Janie's sake, I hope Tea Cake is the true love she's looking for, because I'm pretty sure he's the last guy she'll get, since the first chapter is her coming home after leaving the town with Tea Cake.

A Class(mate) That I Am Thankful For

I don't want to say that I am thankful for one classmate in particular, because that would be a lie. Rather, I am thankful for our class as a whole. Here, I have found a group of people I like to work with, who are intelligent, kind, and willing to work hard. Thank you all for making me laugh, for listening to me, and for offering such interesting arguments and points of view. Thank you Mr. McCarthy for making English a fun and interesting class. I am thankful for all my classmates, who make me look forward to first period every day.

A Principle We Should Keep

"Blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family." This fundamental truth is what keeps families together to this day. Sure, blood may bind you to one another, but love and loyalty are what keeps a family together. And sometimes, blood ties are not even a factor. I know there are people in this world I love like family that are not related to me by blood. This is one of the most important principles in our world today. Without this, there would be no close family relationships, no wonderful groups of friends, no ties that are so awesome that you would die for one another. 
So what would we do if the world fell down around us, if life as we know it ended? Could this principle survive? I feel that it should. Family loyalty is what kept the father and son together in The Road and a lack of which killed the mother. How many people would have survived if their family (be it blood or friends) didn't turn on them, or chose to fend for themselves, but instead banded together and helped each other? And not like the gangs in the book, but instead a larger version of the father and son, protecting each other, feeding each other, and doing whatever they could to ensure that all survived. 
This principle is also what helps make people who they are. Your family defines you (again, not just blood but friends). If the bad guys, the cannibals, had kept their family, would they still eat the flesh of their own? I don't think so. The disapproval of your family is oftentimes enough to keep you from doing something, especially something you're already nervous, already unsure about, like cannibalism. 
When the world falls apart, family loyalty will help people to keep it together.

"Its A Hard Trade Being A Man"

The title is a quote from Hemingway, as verbatim as you can get from a movie. This idea reflects both his life and his writing. Often, the male characters in Hemingway's shorts stories get it rough: Macomber ends up dead, the old waiter is a severe insomniac, the Indian man cuts his throat, Manuel is badly injured, Nick Adams is scarred both mentally and physically and very possibly suffering from PTSD. Why does Hemingway treat his male characters so? Of course, with Nick he is reflecting on his own life experiences, and the old waiter is Hemingway by all but name and trade. While both Hemingway and Macomber are safari hunters, Hemingway was not shot by his wife. Who or what does Macomber symbolize? Hemingway writes very almost nothing without meaning. Why does he have to die? The Indian man is also an enigma. He cuts his throat after his wife has an extremely difficult time birthing someone else's child, Nick Adam's uncle's child. Hemingway also had several affairs during the course of his marriages. Is he reflecting here on the consequences of those affairs? Usually, they caused his current marriages to end. The Indian man who cut his own throat could be a symbol for Hemingway's marriages; when the affair occurs, the marriage dies. Hemingway could also be suggesting that the ending of a marriage is not his fault. His biographical character, Nick Adams, stands to the side and watches his father discover the dead man. He has no contact with him and did nothing to drive him to such extreme lengths. Could Hemingway be suggesting that the marriages where killed by whichever woman he was married to at the time? And does he feel bad about putting his children through al of this every time he gets a divorce? The woman giving birth could symbolize his children, struggling every time he changes wives. Whatever Hemingway meant and symbolized in his short stories, men having a hard time is an almost constant theme.
